Practical tips

Take with cold or tepid water. Start gradually with 1 tablet (0.5 g) for the first two days and step up to 2 tablets on the third and fourth days. Then increase the dose by 1 tablet per day until you are up to the recommended daily amount of 6 – 10 tablets (5 g). You can vary the dose according to need, for example taking more in periods of intense activity or less when convalescing, etc.

The maximum recommended dose is 20 tablets a day. Children under 12 should not take more than 3–5 tablets a day. Spirulina may be consumed throughout the year. Ask your doctor’s advice if you are thinking of taking a course of spirulina while pregnant.

Spirulina should preferably be taken during the day, before or with meals, and not during the evening. Avoid drinking tea, coffee, alcohol or fizzy drinks for 30 minutes after taking spirulina so as not to destroy some of the nutrients and enzymes contained in it. Keep in a dark, dry place (for example, in an airtight container in a cupboard).

The balancing, detoxifying effect of spirulina may produce certain side effects, including headaches, high temperature, stomach upset and changes in stool colour (black or green). These are positive, short-term effects resulting from a natural purification process. However, if you are bothered by it, reduce the dose or stop taking it for a while. It is important to drink lots of water, at least a litre a day, although 2 litres is recommended for efficient elimination of waste matter.

Spirulina is a healthy food that has been consumed by certain civilisations for centuries. However, if you are taking medication, especially anticoagulants, or are diabetic, seek medical advice before taking spirulina.
